Mailing Address vs Residential Address

When completing U.S.-related paperwork or ordering from an overseas store, you may encounter unfamiliar labels such as Mailing, Residential and Physical Address. If you are used to Korean forms asking for a base address and unit details, it can be unclear whether to copy the same English address into every section.

The form may be asking about different purposes, not different translations: where correspondence should arrive and where you actually live. Understanding that distinction comes before choosing which Korean address to convert.

A mailing address is where you receive postal correspondence. A residential address identifies the home where you actually live. They may be identical when you receive mail at home, but they answer different questions.

When an international form asks for a Korean address, choose the correct place before translating it. Accurate English spelling does not fix an address entered under the wrong purpose. This guide explains terminology, not residence eligibility or legal requirements.

What is the practical difference?

Use the mailing field to identify the destination for the correspondence the sender will post. Use the residential field to identify your actual home, subject to the form's definition.

Question Mailing address Residential address
What does it identify? A destination for postal correspondence The home where you live
Can it be your home? Yes, when you receive that mail there Yes, if it is your actual residence
What if you receive mail elsewhere? Check whether that destination is permitted Do not replace your residence just because mail goes elsewhere
What needs checking? Recipient, delivery format and reliable access The actual residence and the form's instructions

Stanford's address documentation provides an example of keeping a separate mailing address when delivery to a residence is not possible or desired. That institution's address model is an example, not permission to use the same arrangement on every form. (Stanford address types)

Mailing address vs physical, home and street address

These labels overlap in some forms, but they do not describe exactly the same category. Physical concerns an actual location; home concerns a residence; street concerns part of the written address.

Label Usual focus Check before entering a value
Residential address Your actual home Is the form asking where you currently live?
Physical address An actual location Is this a person's residence or a business location?
Home address Your home Which home and time period does the form mean?
Street address Street or road name and number, with details as instructed Are City, State, postal code and Country separate fields?

A street-formatted address can be a mailing destination. Its appearance alone does not establish that you live there.

Examples where the addresses differ

These are hypothetical scenarios. A receiving organization and the destination must permit the arrangement; the table does not authorize using someone else's address.

  • Home delivery: You live at a Korean apartment and receive letters there. The two addresses may match.
  • Campus mail: You live in a dormitory but collect mail through a campus mailroom. Check the institution's delivery format separately from the room's location.
  • Family mail collection: You live in a new home while a family member receives permitted correspondence elsewhere. That receiving address does not automatically become your residence.
  • Office collection: You live at home but receive permitted correspondence at work. Keep the workplace and residence distinct.

For each case, ask both “Where do I live?” and “Where can this sender deliver this correspondence?”

Does PO Box Street Addressing make it a residence?

No. A street-format mailing service does not make its location your home. USPS describes Street Addressing at some PO Box locations, and its customer agreement distinguishes that service from a physical residence. (USPS addressing standard, USPS customer agreement)

This is a United States postal-service example, not a rule for Korean PO Boxes. Check the specific form before using a PO Box, commercial mailbox or virtual-office address.

Mailing address vs physical address on USCIS forms

USCIS forms can distinguish a correspondence address from a physical residence. Read the current instructions for the exact form you are submitting rather than applying a general search result to every application. (USCIS I-539 information, official instructions)

Check whether a section requires a U.S. or foreign address, whether the two addresses truly match, and what the form says about alternate recipients or mailing destinations. Do not assume that a mailing arrangement allowed for one form is allowed for another.

How to put the selected Korean address into English fields

Choose the permitted mailing destination or actual residence first. Then use the Korean address converter to find that Korean base address. Enjuso does not decide which address you must report or generate a U.S. address.

  1. Compare the road name, building number and postal code with the actual place.
  2. Add the necessary building and unit details separately.
  3. Place the result in Street / Address Line, City, State / Province and Postal Code as the form requires.
  4. Select the appropriate South Korea option and review the saved result.

The same building with a different unit is not necessarily the same complete address. See Address Line 1 and 2 and international mailing for field placement.

Frequently asked questions

Can my mailing address be my home address?

Yes, when that is the permitted destination for the correspondence and you can receive it there. Compare the actual locations and the form's conditions before copying one field into another.

Is an office my residential address if I receive mail there?

Receiving letters at an office does not make it your home. Keep the actual residence separate and check whether the sender allows office delivery.

Is a street address enough for a mailing address?

Usually you also need the other fields the form requires, such as city, region, postal code, country and unit details. Follow its examples instead of repeating the whole address in each field.
