Mailing Address vs Permanent Address

Applications to U.S. schools and other overseas institutions may ask for both a Mailing Address and a Permanent Address. For someone accustomed to a single Korean address field, that unfamiliar distinction can raise an immediate question: should you enter your current home, a parent's home or another address?

Just as an overseas checkout distinguishes billing from shipping, an institution can separate address purposes. The important first step here is to read which home its Permanent Address field means, rather than choosing a place from the English word alone.

A mailing address is the destination for postal correspondence. A permanent address identifies the home or lasting address defined by the receiving organization. They can be the same, but temporary stays and study abroad can make the distinction important.

Do not automatically use a parent's home, a government-record address or an address in your country of citizenship just because a field says “permanent.” Read what that particular form asks for before converting a Korean address.

How do the two addresses differ?

Start with the purpose. Mailing is about receiving correspondence; permanent is about the organization's definition of your principal or lasting home.

Item Mailing address Permanent address
Main question Where should we send correspondence? Which address is your principal home under our definition?
During a temporary stay A permitted, usable receiving location may be relevant Check whether the form asks for a home elsewhere
Before entering it Confirm delivery arrangements and recipient details Read the form and institution's address policy
When information changes Check the receiving destination Check the underlying home record separately

UMGC, for example, distinguishes the place where a student receives mail from a principal home to which the student may intend to return after a temporary stay. That is a definition within its own policy, not a universal rule. (UMGC student address policy)

Does every school use the same definition?

No single label should be assumed to work identically across institutions. University of Washington maintains separate Current, Permanent and Parent address types and describes a permanent address that is not a PO Box. A parent's address is therefore not automatically interchangeable with the permanent-address field in that system. (UW address types)

If an institution requests a home-country address, follow that instruction. If another defines the field around a principal current home, follow its definition instead. Do not transfer a school's terminology directly to a visa or financial form.

Examples for study abroad and temporary accommodation

The following hypothetical cases explain what to check, not which arrangement an institution must accept.

Situation Mailing-address question Permanent-address question
Applying while living at your Korean home Can you receive the correspondence there? Does that home fit the institution's definition?
Temporarily staying in an overseas dormitory What delivery format does the campus use? Does the form request a home-country or lasting home address?
A short exchange or work trip Where can you actually collect the correspondence? Does the form distinguish the temporary lodging from a principal home?
Moving to a new principal home Can correspondence reach the new address? Does the existing home record need updating?
A parent receives correspondence for you Is this arrangement permitted? Is that parent's home also your principal home under the instructions?

A dormitory room number and a mailroom identifier may not be the same. Obtain the delivery details from the institution; the Korean address converter cannot generate an overseas campus mailbox number.

When should I select “Same as mailing address”?

Select it only when the complete addresses truly match and that use meets the form's definitions. Compare the country, base address, unit details and postal code before allowing automatic copying.

For example, collecting mail at a family home in Seoul does not by itself show that the family home is the permanent address the institution wants. Conversely, if the same actual home satisfies both fields, there is no need to invent a second address.

  1. Identify each address independently.
  2. Compare the country first.
  3. Compare the road or street, building number, unit and postal code.
  4. Use the same-address option only when it accurately represents both answers.

Entering a Korean permanent address in English

Once you have confirmed that the form requires a particular Korean home, use the Korean address converter to look up that base address. Select the actual place required, not an old address merely because it is familiar.

Form field Value to prepare
Address Line 1 / Street Official English road name and building number
Address Line 2 Actual building and unit details, where needed
City Administrative information appropriate to the result and form
State / Province The corresponding region, following the form's examples
Postal Code The actual Korean five-digit postal code
Country The appropriate South Korea option

If your mailing address is overseas and the permanent address is in Korea, their countries and postal formats may differ. Do not copy a Korean postal code into an overseas address or invent a U.S. ZIP Code for a Korean home.

See City and State / Province and Address Line 1 and 2 for field placement. The organization, not the converter, defines which place belongs in the permanent-address section.

What should I check after moving?

Determine whether only your mailing destination changed or whether your principal home changed too. Updating one field does not necessarily update another address record or a separate application.

Review the saved destination, check whether current, permanent and emergency-contact addresses are separate, and follow the institution's update procedure. Mail forwarding should not be assumed to replace its address-update requirements.

This article does not determine immigration status, residence eligibility or reporting obligations. Ask the receiving institution if its definition is unclear.

Frequently asked questions

Must my permanent address be my parents' home?

No. The relevant question is whether it matches the institution's definition for your circumstances. Family relationship alone is not a sufficient reason to choose it.

Is permanent address always the same as residential address?

It may identify the same home, but a form can distinguish your current residence from a longer-term or home-country address. Read both sections rather than copying automatically.

Does “permanent address” mean I am a permanent resident?

The address label and the immigration-status term “permanent resident” are different expressions. The label alone does not establish status or address eligibility.

Can I use a hotel address?

First identify which type of address the form requests. Check the accommodation's delivery arrangements and the institution's conditions; a temporary stay does not make an address suitable for every field.
